On January 30, historian and sexuality scholar Susan Stryker presented a fascinating and entertaining lecture entitled “Cross Dressing for Empire: Embodying White Masculinity through Performance in San Francisco’s Bohemian Club, 1870s-1920,” which argued that, far from being frivolous diversions, these performances played an integral role in shaping club members’ conceptualization of their role in the administration of the U.S. Pacific Empire. Following the presentation, Dr. Stryker opened the floor to questions from the audience. The event took place in Founder’s College’s Senior Common Room (Founders 305), and was attended by some 40 students and faculty. This lecture was presented by The School of Women’s Studies, the Sexuality Studies Program, the Department of History, the Sociology Department, the Division of Social Science and the Centre for Feminist Research.
